Over 70 Kibra residents visited the legal camp, sought and received legal advice on legal issues ranging from registration of persons (birth certificates, identification cards, and death certificates), matrimonial disputes, child custody and maintenance disputes, assault cases, succession matters, reproductive health rights, rights of a patient, rights of an accused persons, property rights, violation of rights of PLHIV in matrimonial settings, among others. The residents were advised on the procedures to follow in their respective cases; where to report; how to follow up; and what to do in case of non-action from the responsible authorities. KELIN also committed to refer some clients to other non-governmental organization where the cases reported were not within KELIN’s mandate.
A beneficiary of the legal advice expressed her gratitude for the legal camp, and stated:
“People here are always faced with legal challenges but do not know what to do. They cannot afford a lawyer. I am grateful and now I know what to do and where to go to access justice.”
KELIN worked closely with Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya (WOFAK), the National Empowerment Network of People Living with HIV in Kenya (NEPHAK) and the Office of the Kibra Member of Parliament Hon. Ken Okoth to mobilize participants. The Legal Camp was supported by a grant from UNDP.
KELIN is also grateful to its team of pro bono lawyers who volunteered their time at this legal camp.
