KELIN Joins 8,000 Activists to March for Treatment

On 18 July 2016, KELIN joined over 8,000 activists from around the world in marching on the streets of Durban, South Africa, as part of the 21st International AIDS Conference. The march highlighted the insufficient funding and subsequent breakdown of health systems to support AIDS treatment, in spite of political promises to end AIDS.

It is estimated that over 20 million people across the world still lack access to anti retroviral medicines. This march comes 16 years after activists stormed the International AIDS conference in Durban causing a revolution in the way AIDS treatment was handled.  The goal of this march was to demand better response to AIDS from world leaders.

The activists presented their demands to key political decision makers in the fight against AIDS, including United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Global AIDS Ambassador Deborah Birx and others.

After participating in the march, the KELIN Executive Director, Mr. Allan Maleche said

“I am glad to have been a part of this historic march calling for treatment for all, among other key issues affecting civil society and communities of persons living with and affected by HIV. We will hold leaders accountable to the demands we have made.”
