Migori Leaders Unite for Better Healthcare Access and Medicine Affordability

On October 2-3, 2024, a consultative meeting in Migori County brought together key health officials, including the CEC Member for Health, Chief Officer for Medical Services, and Chief Officer for Public Health. Organized by KELIN, with support from AidsFonds, the meeting tackled urgent healthcare challenges like access to essential medicines and dwindling donor funds.

Discussions focused on the impact of intellectual property (IP) barriers that restrict access to affordable treatments, including HIV prevention medicines. Stakeholders called for solutions like patent opposition and compulsory licensing to make life-saving medicines accessible.

With donor funds shrinking, participants stressed the need to integrate services such as HIV, maternal health, outpatient care, and tuberculosis treatment. This would help optimize resources and ensure communities get the care they need.

The Chief Officer for Medical Services emphasized collaboration between government, healthcare providers, and communities to strengthen health systems and ensure sustainable service delivery. The meeting concluded with a commitment to support healthcare integration and engage policymakers on drug privacy policies to protect vulnerable groups.

KELIN reaffirmed its dedication to improving healthcare access and outcomes in Migori County through continued dialogue and collaboration.
