Towards Zero SGBV in Homabay: Pushing Forward with Prevention and Response

Homabay County continues to grapple with high rates of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), ranking second nationally with a 54% prevalence rate, as revealed by the 2022 Kenya Demographic Health Survey. The disturbing reality shows that women and girls aged 15-49 face high rates of physical and sexual violence, with 23% experiencing sexual violence.

From October 7th to 9th, 2024, KELIN and the Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC) came together for their annual review meeting to evaluate joint efforts aimed at tackling SGBV in Homabay. Supported by funding from the Danish Family Planning Association (DFPA), the project has seen remarkable progress through targeted interventions, such as training and policy advocacy in Mbita and Rangwe, which have led to impactful developments including the creation of the County SGBV Policy and the Child Welfare and Protection Policy.

Key achievements include influencing county policy frameworks and providing critical support and oversight in these processes.

“This meeting allows us to leverage our different expertise as we strengthen our partnership to prevent and respond to SGBV,” noted Ngina Muyanga, KELIN’s SRHR Program Manager.

Joel Muriithi from GVRC echoed the same sentiment, emphasizing the importance of consolidated efforts in pushing the project’s agenda forward.

In addition to advancing their shared goals, the team also engaged in self-care and team-building activities, recognizing the importance of mental well-being for those working on the frontlines against SGBV.

This project, made possible by DFPA’s support, highlights the power of partnerships in transforming the lives of women and girls in Homabay County.
