Global Digital Health Forum 2024: Amplifying Voices for Equitable Health Data Governance

Nairobi, 6 December 2024 – Transform Health, AeHIN, HELINA, RECAINSA, YET4H, and the UNITE Parliamentarians Network, co-hosted a groundbreaking session on health data governance titled “My Data Our Health: Amplifying Stakeholder Voices for Improved Health Data Governance” during the The Global Digital Health Forum (GDHF) 2024.

The GDHF held from the 4th to 6th December, is a premier international platform for sharing innovations, challenges, and opportunities in digital health. It serves as a space to showcase global and regional advancements, foster partnerships, and drive impactful discussions on how digital technologies can improve health systems and outcomes. This year’s forum emphasized equity, inclusivity, and the ethical use of digital health tools, aligning with global Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals.

Chaired by Pauline Omoto of Transform Health Kenya, the session featured prominent speakers including Kirsten Mathieson (Transform Health), who outlined the campaign’s achievements and the importance of a global HDG framework. Jai Ganesh Udayasankaran (AeHIN),  Joseline Carias (RECAINSA), and Tom Oluoch (HELINA) who shared experiences from regional consultations. Michelle Atieno (YET4H) and Rehema Yahaya (Nivalishe Pad Initiative), who highlighted the perspectives of youth and local communities in HDG advocacy.  All speakers underscored how inclusive HDG can drive equitable health outcomes and strengthen public trust.

Interactive elements, including live polls and a vibrant Q&A session, engaged attendees in exploring their awareness and trust in health data systems. Stakeholders explored the need for inclusive health data governance (HDG) to achieve better health outcomes and build public trust in healthcare systems. The “My Data, Our Health” campaign, a flagship initiative of Transform Health, was spotlighted for its efforts to amplify the voices of youth, women, and marginalized communities in shaping health data policies. The campaign has been pivotal in advocating for a widely consulted, Model Law on Health Data Governance, intended to lay the groundwork for a global framework.

The session concluded with a call to action for governments and stakeholders to prioritize health data governance through participatory processes and robust frameworks. Transform Health and its partners remain committed to ensuring that no voice is left unheard in the global health data governance dialogue.
