Advocacy Training in Kuria

KELIN is conducting a two day workshop for the Equal Rights Committee (ERC) in Kuria on the 5th and 6th of February 2014, in partnership with SOTENI http://www.soteni.org/soteni-in-kenya/kuria that carries out the Kuria Women Empowerment Project (KWEP) with the support of Forum For International Cooperation (FIC).

This initiative begun last year when the ERC  https://kelinkenya.org/2013/12/equal-rights-committee-petitions-government-officials-of-kuria-west-to-support-the-fight-against-female-genital-mutilation/  were selected from KWEP to advocate for women’s rights and to increase communities’ awareness on the social and physical effects of health issues such as HIV, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and human rights violations. The ERC, were then trained by KELIN on human rights, particularly the rights of women and children and how to enforce those rights. In addition the ERC were enlightened on national legislation dealing with FGM and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

To build on to this the ERC will now be trained  on how to conduct advocacy and awareness raising campaigns within the community on key issues affecting women in Kuria East and West particularly on FGM. The participants will get an opportunity to share experiences, challenges and lessons learnt from implementing activities undertaken after the first training. At the end of the training the participants will come up with an advocacy strategy to address the violation of women’s rights within the region.

The Equal Rights Committee will therefore take the lead in advocating for the full implementation of the Prohibition of FGM Act, 2010 and in championing for the rights of women and girls in Kuria.
