THE ORGANISATION

KELIN, a human rights NGO working to protect and promote HIV-related human rights in Kenya. We do this by; providing legal services and support, training professionals on human rights, engaging inadvocacycampaigns that promote awareness of human rights issues, conducting research and influencing policy that promotes evidence-based change. KELIN is in the process of adopting a strategy that will see it focus on the right to health on four thematic areas. Sexual reproductive health rights is one of the thematic areas.

JOB PURPOSE:

To manage and implement Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) programs as outlined within the KELIN strategic plan 2105 – 2019. This will involve involving analysis of laws and operational frameworks at the International, regional national and county levels: Facilitate access to justice to those who have face human rights violations in relation to sexual reproductive health rights: Build capacities of communities and right holders on the area of sexual reproductive health rights:Create and maintain relevant partnerships with stakeholders:Provide support to the institutional building of KELIN.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

i.            Conceptualize program strategies in conjunction with the Deputy Director and other key program officers in the area of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights

ii.            Lead implementation and coordination of all the programmes relating to Sexual Reproductive Health Rights within the organisation

iii.            Coordinate all program activities funded under the thematic area of SRHR

iv.            Fundraise for the thematic area to ensure growth in programmatic and institutional aspects of the thematic area

v.            Foster good relations with donors, partners and the relevant government officials

vi.            Write quarterly program reports and facilitate internal and external donor reports

vii.            Develop annual workplans and budgeted work plans for the thematic area

  1. Undertake financial management of the annual program budget relating to Sexual Reproductive Health Rights including monitoring the spending levels

ix.            Assist with the recruitment and supervision of fellows, interns, volunteers and pro bono lawyers and any other institutional responsibilities required in line with the thematic area

x.            Support the development of KELIN’s publications on key and emerging sexual reproductive health rights issues

xi.            Work with the deputy director to ensure close collaboration with other thematic areas within the KELIN strategy

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in law and five to seven years’ relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required in the area of sexual reproductive health rights.
  2. A Master’s degree in a social science, e.g. in law, human rights, gender studies, political science, public administration, public policy, strongly preferred.
  3. Experience of fundraising for sexual reproductive health programmes is an added advantage.
  4. Fully computer literate – skilled and confident user of office applications such as MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and calendar applications.

Required Competencies:

The Senior Programme Officer – Sexual & Reproductive Health Rights must be able to demonstrate the following:

i.            Strong commitment to KELIN’s vision, mission and core values

ii.            Self-motivated, strong work ethic and attention to detail

iii.            Able to work independently, as well as closely and collaboratively with colleagues in the Nairobi office and remotely

iv.            Experience with public speaking

v.            A proven ability to work effectively in a fluid and fast paced work environment, managing multiple priorities under pressure and accomplishing short- and long- term deadlines with a heavy workload

vi.            Familiarity and previous engagement with the devolved system of governance

vii.            Strong consensus-building skills with the ability to drive change and innovation

  1. Outstanding analytical, problem-solving, and creative thinking abilities

ix.            Knowledge of the international and regional human rights framework and experience using the UN human rights system in relation to issues of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights

x.            Excellent communication, interpersonal, networking and inter-cultural skills

xi.            Excellent writing, editing, research, and oral advocacy skills in English required

Preferred

i.            International, regional and national advocacy experience, including as part of NGO coalitions

ii.            Broad intellectual curiosity, comfort with robust debate and a good sense of humor

   iii.            Strong team player

iv.            Membership to a relevant professional body
