On October 30, KELIN and CEHURD, in partnership through the Solidarity Project by the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition (ITPC), hosted a groundbreaking National Dialogue on Intellectual Property (IP) and Access to Medicines in Kampala, Uganda. The event aimed to dismantle IP barriers and improve access to affordable, life-saving medicines for HIV, TB, hepatitis C (HCV), cervical cancer, and other public health challenges.
This dialogue followed a revealing Market Intelligence Study for Uganda, which highlighted outdated National Treatment Guidelines and limited access to critical Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs) for HCV. Stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, local manufacturers, the Uganda Cancer Institute, civil society, and more joined forces to explore bold solutions to enhance health access.
The National Dialogue led to several significant outcomes and commitments aimed at improving health access in Uganda. Stakeholders advocated for local production of essential medicines, recognizing the need for self-sufficiency in addressing public health needs. There was a strong call to reform intellectual property laws to prevent “evergreening” practices that limit access to critical medicines. Additionally, participants emphasized the importance of expanding healthcare access through state investment and the implementation of long-acting treatments. In a pivotal commitment, Uganda’s Ministry of Health pledged to update the country’s Treatment Guidelines to better align with current health needs, marking a concrete step towards improved healthcare for all.
KELIN and CEHURD plan to publish a comprehensive report from the Market Intelligence Study, with actionable recommendations to shape public health policies in Uganda and beyond. Upcoming dissemination forums will engage stakeholders further, offering a roadmap to sustainable health solutions.
