CHAMPIONING WOMEN LAND RIGHTS: PLANNING THE GLOBAL #STAND4HERLANDRIGHTS 2025 CAMPAIGN IN KENYA.

Between 24th and 25th October 2024, KELIN joined key stakeholders in an inception meeting organized towards the launch of the #stand4herlandrights campaign in Kenya sometime next year. The objective of this global campaign is to generate demand and build political will for stronger Women’s Land Rights (WLR) tenure, governance and stronger standards on WLR within climate change and gender equality frameworks. It also seeks to strengthen and sustain the capacity of networked, women-driven civil society organizations in Kenya to create the enabling environment needed to recognize and promote women’s land rights (WLR) to further sustainable land management (SLM), women’s economic empowerment (WEE), climate justice, and gender justice.

The inception meeting brought together land actors, and  our key partners including, Landesa, Oxfam, Kenya Land Alliance, Federation of Women Lawyers and community-based organizations who were part of the preparatory campaign plans in Kenya in 2019.The campaign in Kenya equally has three major goals including closing the gap between policy and practice, influencing social norms that affect women land tenure and to ensure the voices of the women at the centre. Moving forward, the country coalition has a responsibility to identify the unique women land tenure issues to be prioritized ahead of the impending launch.

During the meeting, stakeholders agreed that collective advocacy, led by grassroots women at local, national, and global levels, is a core solution to the challenges of women’s land rights, driving political will and supporting equitable, participatory transformation of land rights and governance.

Women at the grassroot level play a key role to play when it comes to women land tenure, we cannot look at land rights as a stand-alone aspect since it affects food security, poverty alleviation, economic rights and leadership. Let us look at land from a wholistic perspective “Violet Shivutse, Chair and Africa Regional Representative, Huairou commission and Founder of Shibuye community health workers.

As a key organization involved in the conceptualization of the campaign during the 2019 strategy development process, KELIN is excited to join the movement in expanding the transformative agenda on social norms to a global scale. This effort aims to shape the policy and legal landscape concerning women’s land, property, and economic rights..
