Communities and media in Kakamega County commit to monitoring the right to health

“This training is an eye opener. We now understand the existing structures in our devolved governments, where the gaps are, and where we need to intervene. Health budgeting, quality health services and human rights are issues in question. There is thus need for coordinated efforts within communities over the same.”

These were the reflections of Alice Bakhuya of Tushauriane Community Group, Butere Sub-County, after a two day training of civil society organisations, community based organisations, media and communities of persons living with an affected by HIV and TB from Kakamega County. The training, supported by Commonwealth Foundation, equipped participants with knowledge on monitoring implementation of the right to health, with a particular focus on ensuring transparency and accountability in the health sector.

Participants committed to make targeted interventions at the sub-county and county level. These include: social audits of sub-county health facilities; engagement with sub-county health management teams on facility budgets and expenditures, quality of services, health commodities, among other components.

“As a reporter, I have learned a lot on health issues that will assist me in collecting and reporting on health stories. With this knowledge, I will develop stories that will educate and help the community within my reach,”Obwamu Carolyne Nechesa, MediaMax K24 TV, Kakamega.

This is the first of a series of four trainings to be conducted in Kakamega, Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa under the project protection of the right to health of the vulnerable through transparency and accountability which is supported by a grant from Commonwealth Foundation.

KELIN will continue building capacities of community champions to advocate for transparency and accountability in the health sector.
