Fighting for Healthy Diets: KELIN Equips Lawyers to Tackle Food Policy in Kenya

On August 27th and 28th, 2024, KELIN took a step forward in the battle against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Kenya. With crucial support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), we brought together 13 passionate lawyers from Nairobi, Kisumu, and Nyamira Counties for a two-day intensive training. Our mission? To arm these legal warriors with the knowledge and tools to transform Kenya’s food policies and promote healthier diets across the nation.

As Kenya faces rising malnutrition driven by harmful food environments, this training was more than just a learning opportunity—it was a call to action. Lawyers from civil society, private practice, and even the judiciary joined forces to explore the deep connections between unhealthy diets and NCDs. They didn’t just learn about the law—they learned how to wield it as a weapon in the fight against these preventable diseases.

We tackled the tough issues head-on, from understanding the sneaky tactics of industry interference—like “nutri-washing” and “green-washing”—to dissecting real-world case studies from across Africa and beyond. Our participants left empowered, with practical skills in strategic litigation and a renewed sense of purpose to challenge the status quo in Kenya’s food systems.

Martha Ogutu, Program Officer – Health and Governance, had this to say:

“This training wasn’t just about the law; it was about the future of our communities. We equipped these lawyers with the tools they need to push back against harmful food practices and advocate for policies that protect the health of every Kenyan.”

Pauline Omoto, Program Officer – Health and Governance, added,

“We’re building a network of legal experts who are ready to challenge the industries that profit from unhealthy diets. This is just the beginning, and together, we’re going to make sure every Kenyan has access to safe, healthy food.”

The discussions at this event marked a pivotal moment in Kenya’s fight against NCDs. By enhancing the capacity of legal professionals to advocate for robust food policies, we’re laying the groundwork for a healthier future. And this is just the start. KELIN is committed to driving this momentum forward, raising awareness, and pushing for the regulatory and policy changes Kenya needs.
