At the end of a two day dialogue held on 14-15 August 2015, members of the Homa Bay Court Users Committee (CUC) committed to develop a strategic plan that will inform their intervention on HIV related human rights. The CUC members appreciated the opportunity that KELIN provided in exposing the human rights violations that people living with HIV (PLHIV) face, and acquisition of the relevant legal knowledge to address them. The CUC includes members of the Judiciary, Kenya Police Service, Kenya Prison Service, the Probation Department, the Children’s Department, Chiefs and Community members, amongst others.

Commissioner Catherine Mumma, of the Commission on Implementation of the Constitution and a board member of KELIN presented on “The role of the Court Users Committee: The Rights Based Approach when dealing with issues of HIV”. She encouraged the participants to interrogate Article 10 of the Constitution, reminding them that members of the CUC comprises are bound by the constitutional values of good governance, transparency, integrity and accountability.

At the end of the Dialogue, the resident magistrate, Hon. Nelly Kariuki, a member of the CUC had this to say, “We would like to thank KELIN and UNDP for bringing this dialogue to Homa Bay, I found myself learning a lot even things I thought I knew,”

The following key commitments were made by the participants at the end of the meeting:

  • Formulate a strategic plan on the interventions that will be undertaken by the CUC.
  • Task an implementing committee to ensure that the interventions agreed upon in the strategic plan shall be carried out.

The full workshop report will be shared on KELIN’s website in due course.
