Unsafe abortion remains a pressing public health crisis in Kenya, contributing significantly to high maternal mortality rates in the country. The Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society reported 465,000 abortions in 2019, with 75% of these being unsafe, and adolescent girls, especially under the age of 19, representing 45% of those affected. The International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD), marked annually on 28th September, provides a global advocacy platform on access to safe and legal reproductive health services.
KELIN, in partnership with local stakeholders, commemorated ISAD 2024 in Kilifi County under the theme “Reproductive Autonomy: A Right, Not a Privilege.” This event was held at Coba Cabana Beach in Mtwapa, where key stakeholders, including police officers, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and residents, came together to discuss the dire consequences of unsafe abortion and promote the understanding of safe abortion under the Kenyan Constitution 2010.
The dialogue focused on abortion incidences in Kilifi, with a special emphasis on the vulnerability of adolescents and young women. Participants also engaged in discussions around contraception and the broader context of reproductive justice. KELIN’s Program Officer, Elsie Milimu, outlined the legal provisions for safe abortion and the responsibilities of healthcare providers and law enforcement in ensuring women’s rights are upheld in line with Article 26(4) and Article 43 of the Constitution.
The event also featured a beach cleanup, symbolizing the collective responsibility of the community in addressing health-related issues. By working together, the community demonstrated the unity needed to tackle unsafe abortion and advocate for access to reproductive health services. Notable leaders present included Ms. Agneta Karembo, Chief Officer of Gender and Social Services, Kilifi County, and Mr. Jeremiah Mwarome, Chief of Shimo La Tewa, who emphasized the role of government and law enforcement in supporting safe access to reproductive healthcare.
KELIN remains dedicated to promoting reproductive justice by engaging all stakeholders in ensuring safe, legal, and accessible abortion services across Kenya.
