From 11th to 13th September 2024, KELIN Kenya’s Executive Director Allan Maleche, Legal Counsel Nyokabi Njogu, and Programme Manager Timothy Wafula visited Afya Na Haki (Ahaki) in Uganda for a powerful learning and exchange visit. The visit marked a key moment in strengthening regional collaboration in health, human rights, and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocacy.
Ahaki, an African research and training institute known for its Africentric approach, offered KELIN invaluable insights into its unique strategies for advocacy, research, and litigation. The cross-learning experience emphasized the importance of leveraging regional expertise and local knowledge to advance SRHR across Africa.
Nyokabi Njogu, reflecting on the discussions, stated, “Litigating for reproductive justice for women requires a deep understanding of both the legal landscape and the lived realities of African women. The exchange with Ahaki reaffirmed the importance of crafting region-specific litigation strategies to secure these rights.”
Digital rights also emerged as a crucial area of focus, as both teams explored how technology can empower advocacy efforts in the region. “The regional work on digital rights is growing, and there’s so much potential for collaboration. We are excited to see how we can leverage digital platforms to enhance access to SRHR and health advocacy,” said Timothy Wafula during the visit.
The visit included a meeting with another key Ugandan partner, CEHURD, where discussions on strategic litigation, access to medicines, and advocacy partnerships took center stage. These engagements have set the stage for more robust collaborations between Kenya and Uganda.
“Building these partnerships is critical for the future of SRHR and health rights across the region,” noted Allan Maleche. “This exchange visit has strengthened our resolve to work together, creating a formidable network that spans borders and brings about real change for the communities we serve.”
As KELIN continues to expand its role as a research and advocacy leader, this visit was a pivotal moment in aligning regional efforts for a more equitable future in health and human rights.
