KELIN and Partners Unite to Tackle Non-Communicable Diseases Through Bold Food Policy Reforms

In response to the alarming rise of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension in Kenya, a coalition of leading health and policy organizations gathered in Naivashafrom 7th – 9th October 2024, to strategize stronger communication efforts for food policy advocacy. The meeting, organized by the International Institute for Legislative Affairs (IILA), Kenya Legal & Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN) with participation from  NCD Alliance of Kenya (NCDAK), and National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), aims to combat unhealthy dietary habits driven by the consumption of ultra-processed foods.

The 3-day session brought together communications experts from various organizations, who evaluated existing strategies and developed a unified approach to support key food policy initiatives. These initiatives include advocating for front-of-pack warning labels (FOPWL) and enforcing marketing restrictions on unhealthy foods, both seen as pivotal in creating a healthier food environment in Kenya.

By fostering collaboration among the partners, the working group aims to enhance the effectiveness of advocacy campaigns that target Kenya’s policy landscape, ensuring a stronger push for reforms that will reduce the marketing and consumption of harmful food products. The joint communications strategy developed will empower the coalition to drive impactful change through coordinated and amplified efforts.

This coalition represents a vital step forward in Kenya’s battle against diet-related NCDs. By pooling expertise and resources, the partners are better positioned to advocate for comprehensive food policies that promote healthier dietary choices and significantly reduce the burden of NCDs in the country.
