KELIN engages over 1200 widows through legal aid and targeted community conversations on rights in Nyakach

On Friday, 15th November 2024 KELIN joined the Samson Odoyo Foundation as an expert in land, inheritance, and legal frameworks in support of women’s rights.  In a meeting with widows from Moro, Nyakach subcounty, the two institutions sought to address issues of gender-based violence, equitable land rights, inheritance and access to justice.

The Samson Odoyo foundation supported the widows with food donations to ease their dystopian livelihoods as a result of disinheritance after the demise of their husbands that left them bereft. KELIN, facilitated the capacity strengthening sensitization on gender transformative approaches to land rights and succession issues benefited over one thousand two hundred widows (1200). The session was informed by the community’s need to better understand the legislative environment around land and women’s rights. It focused on how to utilize rights-based approaches to address the increased land inequities and gender-based violence cases in the area.

During the session, KELIN shared the importance of enhancing widows’ knowledge and informational capacity to claim their rights. We disseminated 3415 IEC materials on marriage, succession, land rights, compendium of cases, milestone report, writing of wills, youth and land, and obtaining inheritance through the Office of the Public Trustee. KELIN also offered legal aid services and received varied cases including boundary disputes, succession, matrimonial property cases and registration. 23 of these cases were assigned to the council of elders working with KELIN, already trained in alternative justice systems mechanisms.

As a result of the meeting, KELIN identified 54 champions for sensitization to promote access to justice   and advocate for women’s land rights based on the action points for follow-ups that will culminate into a memorandum of understanding.  We believe that this form of grassroot building movements at the community level will create self-sustained access to justice for those who need it the most.
