KELIN helps reconstruct home for widow Mary Nyalik in Nyando

On 5 October 2017 KELIN, with support from well-wishers and the Community, participated in the construction of a house for Widow Mary Nyalik in Ahero, Kenya. The construction, which is part of KELIN’s larger initiative is aimed at rebuilding houses for widows whose cases have been successfully resolved under the traditional justice system but are unable to reconstruct houses in their matrimonial homes due to economic constraints.

Mary Nyalik’s husband died in 1999, and she was thereafter chased away by her in-laws. Through KELIN’s intervention, the Nyando elders successfully mediated her case in 2014. However, the family did not have room to accommodate her.

Guided by the provisions of Article 159 of the Constitution, KELIN has been using the traditional dispute resolution mechanisms to resettle widows who were disinherited or lost their properties as a result of their HIV status. To date, KELIN has resettled 308 widows and re-build for 21 widows in both Kisumu and Homa Bay Counties.

KELIN aims to continue constructing houses for the widows through the support of partners and well-wishers. You can also make a difference in the lives of the Kenyan widows, by contributing through our website on https://www.kelinkenya.org/2017/02/rebuild-kenyan-womens-homes-lives
