KELIN Joins Call to Action: Communities’ Access to Quality Affordable Suitable Effective Diagnostics

ASLM Special Convention on Diagnostics 4th – 7th Nov 2024, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire

From 4th to 7th November 2024, @KELINKenya participated in the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) Special Convention on Diagnostics in Abidjan. The convention brought together National TB Managers and National Laboratory Directors from across Africa, as well as communities, civil society representatives, and donor agencies for a discussion on transforming diagnostic systems in Africa by harnessing innovation and quality assurance.

During the convention, @KELINKenya joined communities and civil society representatives under the banner of Diagnostics Equity Consortium in a one-day consensus building and strategy meeting. A resolution of the strategy meeting was delivered as a call to action to laboratory directors present at the convention. In the call to action, the consortium noted the quantum leap in the development of new diagnostic tools and strategies, especially in the field of TB, and called upon countries to prepare and plan for the introduction and rollout of new and innovative point-of-care and/or near point-of-care diagnostics, once out of the pipeline. Further, @KELINKenya joined the Global Fund in a special session that brought together key stakeholders in TB diagnostics to discuss the TB diagnostic pipeline, current challenges and requirements for new diagnostics tools. Access to a quality diagnostic test remains a huge barrier to finding missing people with TB and ensuring those diagnosed receive quality care. The session was key in discussing how Global Fund’s NextGen Market Shaping Strategic Initiative will support the implementation of innovative approaches and mechanisms to support the planning for and the introduction and scale up of new tools in Global Fund supported countries.

@KELINKenya believes that everyone should have access to essential TB diagnostics, regardless of where they live or their economic status. KELIN was at the Convention to amplify the “Speed Up, Scale-Up TB Testing” campaign, stressing the importance of affordable, accessible testing that reaches the underserved and vulnerable populations. Our approach goes beyond medicine – it is about treating every person with respect and dignity. At KELIN, we advocate for TB interventions that not only fight the disease but also protect patients’ rights, helping to reduce the stigma and discrimination that still surrounds TB.

“At KELIN, we stand firmly with the call for accessible, affordable, and effective diagnostic tools for all, especially those in underserved communities. Our participation in the ASLM Special Convention reflects our commitment to advancing TB testing, not just as a health issue, but as a matter of human dignity. Ensuring everyone has access to essential diagnostics is crucial in the fight against TB, and we will continue to advocate for systems that protect both health and human rights.” – Timothy Wafula, Programme Manager, HIV, TB & Key Populations
