On 1st of March 2023, KELIN will join Homa Bay County for the launch of a domesticated Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Policy. This marks a significant milestone in the County’s commitment to SGBV prevention and response interventions.
Statistics have continued to show an upward trend in SGBV cases in Homa Bay, primarily driven by social and cultural norms that often undermine the law and subdue already powerless individuals or groups based on their gender. Implementation of the Homa Bay SGBV policy will serve the communities in addressing the unique cultural issues that perpetuate SGBV.
As part of a multi-sectoral approach in addressing gender-based violence in Homa Bay, KELIN with support from the Danish Family Planning Association (DFPA) has continued to collaborate with the County government of Homa Bay providing the requisite resources (technical and financial) to develop the SGBV Policy with the aim of a coordinated response, that serves to prevent SGBV as well as report violence through clear and non-discriminatory pathways.
The launch of the Policy will reinforce legislative frameworks already in force alongside other laws the County Assembly seeks to develop to support all the programs and projects aimed at empowering the survivors of SGBV in the County.
KELIN congratulates Homa Bay County and looks forward to its implementation as the true mark of commitment to end SGBV in our communities.
