The dialogue is orgnaised by the United Nations Secretary- General’s High Level Panel on Access to medicines in partnership with the Department of Health, Republic of South Africa. Building on the dialogue that took place in London last week, it is expected to stimulate an interactive and inclusive conversation among various stakeholders on innovation and access to medicine. The dialogue seeks to provide an opportunity to discuss solutions that would address the delicate balance between the rights of inventors, international human rights law, trade law and public health objectives. Participants include patient groups, civil society, government officials and other stakeholders.
In response to a call issued by the high level panel in December 2015, KELIN partnered with the Stop TB Partnership, University of Chicago, Treatment Action Group and a number human rights activists to make submissions to the panel. A total of 176 submissions were made. The Treatment Action Campaign, Section 27 and other partners will picket outside the hotel where the hearings will take place.
The proceedings of the dialogue will be live streamed, and will provide an opportunity for civil society organisations and patient rights to group to reemphasis that access to medicine is a right to health and right to life.
