The forum brought together over 100 representatives of Civil Society Organizations who form the umbrella partners under ARASA from Eastern and Southern Africa to deliberate on programmatic and financial issues that impact on realization of human and health rights for communities. A number of issues were discussed including; the shrinking space for Civil Society Organizations in the continent, adapting in the contexts of the changing resource landscape and strengthening partnership among others.
‘’CSOs must ensure accountability in the work they do; if we have to hold our governments accountable then, the accountability test starts with us.’’ Remarked Michaela Clayton, ARASA Country Director
The forum provided an opportunity for ARASA to share their programmatic as well as financial reports for the year 2016. It is worth noting that the organization’s financial base continues to improve as they focus on building capacities of CSOs on issues of advocacy.
Moving forward partners identified key advocacy issues to focus on: advocacy for the implementation of protective laws and policies and the repeal/reform of bad laws; advocacy for meaningful participation of CSOs in the implementation of right to health for all at county level; and diversification of resources and opportunities to advance community work.
