On 17th and 18th July 2023, KELIN participated in a 2-day workshop convened under the Kenya Stakeholders’ Coalition on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a coalition coordinated by a Steering Committee/Thematic Group conveners consisting of Civil Society Organizations working on Human Rights. KELIN convenes the Right to Health Thematic Group and contributes to other thematic groups including the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, HIV/AIDS, Right to Food, Women Land and Property Rights and Climate Change thematic groups.
The workshop brought together all Thematic Group Convenors to develop Simplified Advocacy Tools for the 3rd Cycle UPR Recommendations. The simplified tools would then be used to target duty bearers including Members of Parliament, County Assemblies, and other government officials from the various Ministries, Department and Agencies. It is envisaged that the tool will make it easy to pick and identify recommendations for further action and or subsequent implementation.
Universal Periodic Review (UPR) one of the key mandates of the UN Human Rights Council, is a unique inter-governmental peer-review Human Rights mechanism where each of the 194 Member States of the United Nations is reviewed every five years. Under the mechanism, States under review voluntarily accept to implement recommendations given to the recommending States. By accepting to do so, the Government is expected to enact laws, adopt policies, and allocate budgets that would ensure that the said recommendations are implemented.
The Kenya Stakeholders Coalition will use the advocacy tool developed to complement the implementation of recommendations to government based on the thematic groups. Additionally, the coalition is gearing up to conduct the mid term review of Kenya’s performance in the implementation of the recommendations. KELIN will actively support the process as the thematic group convener under the right to health.
