KELIN partners with UNDP to sensitize members of the Judiciary

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in partnership with the Employment and Labour Relations Court, National AIDS Control Council (NACC), National Empowerment Network of People living with HIV & AIDS in Kenya (NEPHAK) and KELIN will conduct a two day judicial dialogue on HIV, SGBV and human rights, on 16 -17 September 2016. The colloquium, which will be held in Nakuru County, is set to engage 35 judicial officers from the Employment Court.

The Colloquium has been organized in recognition of the crucial role the Judiciary plays in addressing HIV related legal and human rights issues, with an aim of creating an enabling legal environment that supports effective national HIV response. The forum aligns with the Judiciary’s strategic plan, 2014 – 2018, which inter alia aims at creating a judiciary that is sensitive and responsive to the needs and aspirations of Kenyans.

One objective of the forum is to sensitize participants on the legal and policy frameworks on HIV, SGBV and human rights. The forum equally seeks to create linkages between the HIV Coordinating Mechanisms (i.e. NACC, HIV and AIDS Tribunal) and the Employment Court to foster justice for persons living with HIV and to enhance the broader response to HIV and AIDS Kenya.

The organizers anticipate that by the end of the workshop the court’s staff will have increased awareness on their role in protecting the rights of people living with HIV, survivors of SGBV and members of key populations. It’s further envisioned that we shall have strengthened collaboration and referral mechanism between the Employment Court, HIV Tribunal, NACC, NEPHAK and other HIV partners.

The Colloquium anchors well with one of KELIN’s 2015 – 2019 strategic plan which aims to create partnerships at county, national, regional and global levels for better delivery of our mandate.
