KELIN pays tribute to Nancy Akello, a community health human rights crusader

It is with deep sorrow that Community Health Advocates mourn the passing of a passionate and committed health advocate, whose life and enthusiastic approach to community work has been inspirational to hundreds of people while advancing awareness on health related rights. Mrs Nancy Akello passed 9 October, 2017 in her house in Nairobi’s Mwiki Estate, Kasarani area after succumbing to heart-related conditions.

Until her death, Nancy was a committed Community Health Advocate from Kasarani Sub-County, who was trained on advocacy for health rights by KELIN and the AIDS and Rights Alliance of Southern Africa (ARASA). She made outstanding contributions towards realization of empowered communities in access, demand and utilization of HIV, TB, and Sexual Reproductive Health services, as well as justice among communities of persons living with and those affected by HIV and TB in Kenya. She has also been a great resource to other organizations such as AIDS Health Foundation (AHF), and a mentor mother under the Afya Jijini project.  She was a patient support expert and peer educator at Mbagathi Sub-County Hospital; and a treatment literacy and couple testing champion at Firm Foundation, Mwiki – Kasarani.

Nancy leaves behind a husband and two young girls aged six and ten. Her demise leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill due to the passion, diligence and excellent interpersonal relationship with her wide clientele.
