KELIN Rallies African Allies to Push SRHR Agenda Forward

On August 23-24, KELIN took center stage at the Regional Colloquium on the Role of Regional and Sub-Regional Human Rights Bodies in Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Africa. The event, co-hosted by KELIN, the Dulla Omar Institute, and the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA), brought together a powerful alliance of SRHR champions from across the continent.

This colloquium wasn’t just another meeting; it was a vital space where key players in the SRHR sector—spanning regional, sub-regional, and national human rights bodies, civil society, academia, and activism—came together to tackle the most pressing SRHR issues of our time. The discussions delved deep into the intersectionality of SRHR with religion and morality, the emerging threats of access to medicines and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the pivotal role of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) in advancing SRHR, and the powerful impact of litigation in both national and regional courts.

Ngina Muyanga, KELIN’s SRHR Program Manager, captured the essence of the event: “We leave this colloquium not just with ideas, but with a renewed commitment to drive the SRHR agenda forward. The challenges are vast, but so are our collective strengths.” Her words echoed the determination shared by all participants.

Nyokabi Njogu, KELIN’s Legal Counsel, emphasized the organization’s proactive approach: “KELIN has always been at the forefront of litigating critical SRHR issues, from combating obstetric violence to challenging the prohibition of female genital mutilation and advocating for safe, legal abortion. We’re more committed than ever to leveraging legal advocacy to safeguard sexual and reproductive health rights across Africa.”

With renewed energy and fresh insights, KELIN is poised to continue championing SRHR on all fronts. The connections and strategies forged at this colloquium will be instrumental as they move forward in their mission.
