The training was aimed at creating awareness on the functions of law and policy change towards realizing the right to the highest attainable standards of health. It was also aimed at enhancing the fellows’ understanding on their role in creating a beneficial health policy. The training was facilitated by various civil society organizations and was attended by over 30 fellows.
Ms. Jessica Oluoch represented KELIN and facilitated a section of the module on ‘Health Policy and the Law.’ She led a group discussion on some of the health related cases that KELIN is working on and also led discussions on the applicable health laws, cases, comparative health regulations in the different countries, the legal challenges faced by healthcare providers and the progress towards a suitable health policy. Participants showed great interest in KELIN’s cases especially the TB is not a crime case, forced and coerced tubal ligation of women living with HIV cases, the presidential directive case and the Alex Madaga case.
During the meeting a number of points raised called for KELIN’s attention, notably the need to provide guidance to one of the fellows Dr. Elizabeth Ohara, a fellow from the USA, who is interested in developing a policy on the alternative to methadone for injection drug users. KELIN has contributed to this forum for the last three years and we look forward to contributing to next year’s training.
