KELIN set to host 3rd Regional Forum for Law Enforcement Officers and Health Care Workers

On 27 – 29 June 2017, KELIN in partnership with AIDS and Rights Alliance of Southern Africa (ARASA), ENDA Santé, Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) and the United Nations Development Programme Regional Office (UNDP Regional Office) will conduct a three day capacity strengthening forum on HIV and TB, Human Rights and the Law in Mombasa County, Kenya. The forum’s audience constitutes law enforcement officers and health care workers drawn from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. This is the third forum of its kind under the Africa Regional HIV & TB Grant – Removing Legal Barriers, financed by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria This three year forum was premised on the fact that human rights violations and the failure to fulfill human rights obligations increases key populations’ vulnerability to contracting HIV & TB and reduces access to diagnostic, prevention and treatment services.

As we draw to an end in the grant making period, this year’s forum will reflect on the challenges, achievements and prospects of long term sustenance of the project whilst evaluating the effectiveness of regional grants in advocating for the rights of key populations. The key objectives of the meeting are:

  • To provide a platform for in-depth analysis on the successes of the regional grant and how this success stories can be carried forward nationally, regionally and globally;
  • To provide a platform for in depth discussions on emerging issues and opportunities for synergy in carrying forward action plans; and
  • To provide a platform for forging partnerships at country regional and global level to carry forward the work of the regional grant.

It is expected that this year’s forum, will greatly contribute towards the overall goal of the programme, strengthening the legal and policy environment to reduce the impact of HIV and TB on key populations in Africa. KELIN also anticipates that at the end of the forum participants will work with their local Country Coordinating Mechanisms to push for the implementation of human rights programmes in their country grants.
