On the 29th of February and 1st of March 2024, the Kenya National DHRP Research Team, compromising of KELIN’s DHRP staff, (Co-investigators, Researchers, and Research Assistants from the Kenya Community Advisory Team) held an orientation workshop in Diani, Kenya. The workshop was conducted in preparation for field work, specifically the Data Collection phase of the research work under the DHRP project scheduled to start in May 2024.
The DHRP Project is a Participatory action research project based on the Future of human rights in the digital age being held in Kenya, Vietnam, Colombia and Ghana. The research in Kenya will focus on ways to promote human rights of diverse young people in the use of data and digital technologies. Young study participants will have a voice in the design, implementation and analysis of research as well as training in digital rights, which will be delivered through workshops with young people and shared freely online. During the data collection phase of the research, the team is planning to do several field visits, to conduct Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions with various populations such as Persons Living with HIV, sex workers and men who have sex with men.
The orientation workshop was a pivotal step in ensuring the successful implementation of the Research by understanding the Research protocol, mastery of methodologies, practical participant recruitment, data collection techniques, community engagement and future steps and planning for Kenya’s Research. The orientation was conducted through various brief presentations from the team, group discussions which engaged the participants through question-and-answer sessions and practical illustrations and mock-ups of focus group discussions and key informative interviews. (FGDs | KIIs). Some key reflections from the discussions were on the challenges that may be encountered during the interviews and ways in which we will be able to mitigate the same and other risks.
The KELIN team showcased an increased momentum and collective commitment as they plan to address the intricate challenges posed by digital health technologies in Kenya. The other focus countries’ research teams, Ghana, Vietnam, and Colombia will also be conducting research in their country’s context on digital health and general global human rights movement in line with DHRP objectives.
