The Human Rights and Democratization in Africa LLM (HRDA) course is a unique teaching program, hosted in South Africa, made up of students from across the African region. During an intensive one-year course, the students are taught by eminent lecturers in the field of human rights, and gain invaluable practical exposure by traveling across the continent to a wide variety of cross cutting learning opportunities.
Ms. Saoyo’s topic will focus on the recently trending African cases that have been litigated on women’s rights. These cases include: the Mildred Mapingure case in Zimbabwe regarding access to safe abortion for survivors of sexual violence; the Maimuna Awour case in Kenya on detention of women in hospital after delivery; the case against Nakaseke District Hospital in Uganda over failure to provide emergency obstetric care, among others. her presentation will also highlight the ongoing forced sterilization cases in Kenya. She will speak alongside renowned academic scholars in the women’s rights field, including Professors Sylvia Tamale, Karin Van Marle and Thandabantu Nhlapo.
