KELIN & UNDP-Kenya undertake the First County Dialogue on HIV, Human Rights & the Law in Homa Bay County

Twenty-five members of the Homa Bay Court Users Committee (CUC) will participate in a dialogue on HIV, Human Rights and the Law that takes place from the 14-15 August, 2015 in Homa Bay County. This is the first dialogue to be undertaken by KELIN & UNDP-Kenya at the county level as one of the initiatives aimed at taking forward the recommendations of previous regional Judicial Dialogues on HIV, Human Rights and the Law held in 2013 and 2014.

The county dialogue seeks to achieve the following:

  1. Provide a critical opportunity for discussion and experience-sharing between committee members on complex legal and human rights issues posed by the HIV epidemic.
  2. Provide an opportunity to explore the role of the Court Users Committee in assisting the Court effectively adjudicate on legal and human rights issues posed by the HIV epidemic.
  3. Enhance partnership between the Judiciary through the Court Users Committee, the National HIV response and the community at large.

The participants shall include judicial officers; police and probation officers; representatives from the Children’s Department; lawyers; the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution; and the community, amongst others. Judicial officers and other stakeholders, from other Counties, working in the HIV field will grace the occasion and make relevant presentations. At the end of the dialogue it is expected that there will be increased awareness among Committee members on the role of the law and the courts in protecting the rights of people living with HIV and members of key populations in Homa Bay County.
