The training focused on empowering widows to initiate intergenerational dialogues with the adolescent girls with the aim of opening up communication channels on sexual and reproductive health and rights. These conversations were anchored on the need to encourage the use traditional structures of custodianship between the ‘mothers’ in the society and adolescent girls and young women.
As a result of this training, a sub county level network of widow champions has now been initiated to document possible sexual violations, take initiative to ensure referral and reporting of these cases and ensure justice for adolescent girls and young women
“As a human rights champion in Muhoroni sub county with the additional knowledge, I will utilize the existing structures including the police, youth friendly centers and the courts to ensure sexual violation are reported unlike the current situation where such cases are resolved at the household level” Consolata Otieno, Widow champion, Muhoroni sub county
