On 2-3 November 2017, KELIN conducted a two day community sensitization forum on Violence Prevention HIV, Human Rights and the Law. The forum, which was conducted in Mombasa County, is an activity under the Partnership to Inspire, Transform and Connect the HIV response (PITCH) grant.
The interactive forum was well attended by key populations’ representatives from the County. The topics interrogated at the forum included: Understanding violence and violence prevention; common forms of human rights violations perpetrated against key populations; laws protecting key populations from violence; and appreciation of the role of counties in implementing health as a devolved function.
At the end of the meeting, participants committed to developing a violence response plan. The violence response team constituting peer educators and outreach workers from the organizations represented will implement this.
KELIN will work with the violence response team to ensure cases of violence are escalated to the Constitutional mandated National Human Rights Institutions to give more prominence to the issues and ensure justice for Key populations.
