KELIN, alongside Women Collective Kenya and partners in the Reproductive Justice Watch, marked International Safe Abortion Day on 28 September 2024 with a spirited soccer tournament at Riruta Stadium. Themed “Kick Abortion Stigma Out”, the event brought together local teams like Muslim Sportiff, Mihang’o Elite, Mainstream Sports Academy, and Acakoro Football Academy, all rallying behind the cause of reproductive rights.
Young people from Nairobi’s informal settlements filled the stands, cheering on teams with players from all genders. But it wasn’t just about the game. Between matches, KELIN and partners educated the crowd on their constitutional right to access safe abortion under Article 26 of Kenya’s Constitution. Marie Stopes Kenya also offered free medical checkups and guidance on contraception.
Abortion stigma — which unfairly shames individuals linked to abortion, including women, healthcare providers, and pro-choice advocates — was the real opponent. It’s a pervasive issue affecting personal relationships, communities, and even the laws and institutions that govern reproductive health.
The tournament ended with a powerful commitment: participants vowed to challenge abortion stigma and promote the use of the Ask Aunty Jane platform, a digital health service providing vital reproductive health information. By fostering open dialogue, this initiative is reshaping how communities view safe abortion care and empowering women to make informed, safe choices.
