Promoting and Protecting Equal Rights in Kuria through Community Advocacy

12022014a

KELIN in partnership with Forum for International Cooperation (FIC) and SOTENI conducted the final workshop for the Kuria Women Empowerment Equal Rights Committee. The two day workshop took place in Kehancha on the 5th and 6th February, 2014.

During the training, the ERC participants shared their experiences and challenges, while promoting equality rights within the community. The ERC were also enlightened on how to use different strategies to conduct advocacy activities. Among the key lessons included the use of media as an advocacy tool, policy advocacy and lobbying their County Government (Migori) to come up with legislation to support the implementation of the Prohibition of FGM Act. KELIN’S Monitoring and Evaluation officer Mr. Edgar Makona informed the ERC on the importance of monitoring and evaluation while conducting advocacy activities. Mr. Makona gave the participants tools to measure the impact of the advocacy activities they planned to carry out.

Mrs. Florence Robi, the account administrator for the Kuria Equal Rights Committee Facebook group stated, “I now know how to use the media as an advocacy tool, I will rely on social media so much to sensitize our youth on the rights of women and girls in Kuria.”

In taking forward the lessons learnt during the training, the Equal Rights Committee   developed an advocacy strategy with timelines on when they would be carrying out their advocacy activities within Kuria East and West. The preferred result would be to eradicate FGM, GBV and also to reduce stigma and discrimination associated with FGM, GBV and HIV.
