Securing Your Family’s Future: Men as Allies in Advancing Women’s Land Rights in Siaya

On September 11th and 12th, 2024, KELIN conducted a training session for 42 men (young and old) in Siaya, Kenya aimed at transforming social norms regarding women’s rights. A flagship program by KELIN, the Securing Your Family Futures (SYFF) programme is intended to sensitize communities about harmful social practices, norms, culture and patterns towards promoting gender equality.

The meeting’s objective was to foster collaboration and strategic partnerships with men, that is brothers, husbands, and fathers in protecting the futures of their sisters, wives and daughters   by advancing equal land and property ownership through succession and inheritance. This approach aims to prevent communal and family disputes, promote peace of mind, enhance social harmony, and contribute to community development.

Key topics covered during the meeting included an introduction to the legal frameworks governing land in Kenya, the importance of joint decision-making in households, as well as measures men can take to ensure equitable land rights as agents of change.

Participants confirmed that the curriculum aligns with their values and could be effectively shared within their communities and peer groups. The SYFF curriculum aims to demystify social and peer norms that undermine women’s land and property rights, with the hope of increasing women’s access to, use of, ownership of, and involvement in land-related decision-making in Kenya.

KELIN intends to empower communities on the women land and property rights by strengthening partnerships with the duty bearers and other stakeholders, building capacities of elders through trainings to resolve disputes through Alternative Justice Systems to enforce Article 159 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 as well as confronting harmful practices that impede the enjoyment of women’s land and property right.

KELIN plans to hold the next series of social norms training in Kajiado in October to further unpack key social issues that impact on community land tenure rights for women.
