Strengthening Human Rights Accountability: Civil Society Learns to Navigate the African Human Rights System

At the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Banjul, Gambia, members of the Litigants Group, including KELIN, participated in a focused training session to strengthen their ability to utilize the ACHPR’s communication procedures. This training, held on October 14, 2024, was part of the African Civil Society Engagement (ACSE) initiative and aimed to build stronger jurisprudence by guiding participants on how to report human rights violations within the ACHPR framework.

The training provided clear insights into the steps involved in filing and maintaining a communication (human rights violation complaint) before the ACHPR. It covered critical aspects such as admissibility and merits, in line with Article 56 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and its Rules of Procedure.

“This training is not only valuable for the Litigants Group members in enhancing their capacity to file and maintain complaints, but it is also an important opportunity for all participating civil society organizations to become better equipped to engage the ACHPR,” – Ms. Sibongile Ndashe, Executive Director, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) highlighted.

Civil society organizations (CSOs) attending the session expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the ACHPR’s communication procedures and contribute to building regional human rights jurisprudence

“As members of the Litigants Group, we are committed to using this knowledge to support the ACHPR’s mandate and welcome more frequent capacity-building sessions to solidify its role as a key accountability mechanism for African Union member states,” said Elsie Milimu, Program Officer at KELIN.

KELIN continues to stand firm in its mission to promote and protect health-related human rights for all, utilizing regional human rights platforms like the ACHPR to advance its goals.
