Training On HIV, Human Rights and Disability

KELIN in partnership with United Disability Empowerment in Kenya (UDEK), and support from Aids Fonds, has organized a workshop for persons with disability on HIV related human rights and their enforcement. The three days’ residential workshop will be held at Kasarani Sports View Hotel, Nairobi, from the 25th to 28th March, 2014.

The objectives of the training are to enhance the participants’ understanding on HIV, Human Rights and the law; to share experiences and challenges faced by persons with disabilities living with HIV; and to discuss the role of the law in addressing the challenges. They will share experiences of human rights violations with regard to HIV and disability, and explore strategies of addressing them. Further, opportunities for advancement of rights for persons with disability living with HIV in Kenya will be discussed in a session engaging representatives of various, relevant government institutions.

The participants are beneficiaries of United Disability Empowerment in Kenya (UDEK), Autism Society of Kenya, Kenya Association of the Intellectually Handicapped, United Disabled Persons of Kenya, Deaf Empowerment Kenya, Kenya National Association for the Deaf, Kenya Union of the Blind, Association for the Physically Disabled Persons of Kenya and National Empowerment Network for Persons Living with HIV and AIDS in Kenya (NEPHAK).

The participants will be trained on the basic human rights concepts and the link between human rights and HIV, the provisions of the Constitution of Kenya that protect the rights of persons with disability living with or affected by HIV, relevant legal provisions protecting these rights, and available redress mechanisms. They will further be familiarized with government institutions mandated to protect human rights in relation to human rights and disability in Kenya.
