The meeting was important to KELIN as a follow up on our partnership with the CUCs. Mr. Onyango Ondeng represented KELIN and facilitated a session on “Women and Land Rights in Context” and outlined the traditional and cultural practices that hinder women from inheriting land and property. He stressed that Article 159 (2) (c) and (3) of the constitution recognizes the use of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms hence providing a window for mediation on widows’ rights.
He introduced KELIN’s publications that seek to enhance the use traditional mechanisms and expedite the recognition of the formal justice system. These include the training manual titled “Providing an effective learning experience for women’s property rights using alternative dispute resolution mechanism: The place for traditional justice system” and a handbook on Women’s Property Rights
