United Towards Zero Tolerance on Sexual Violence: KELIN Participates in the Launch of the Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CASV) Strategic Plan 2024-2028

On 27th March 2024, KELIN, a member of the Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CASV) actively participated in the launch of the coalition’s Strategic Plan 2024-2028. The four-year strategic plan aims to end sexual violence in Kenya through enhancement of coordinated approaches amongst like-minded CSOs towards advocacy initiatives that address sexual violence. The launch was graced by the 15 founding members of CASV[1], sexual violence survivors, representatives from UN Agencies, Embassies, Development partners, Government and media. National Council on Administration of Justice, National Government Affirmative Action Fund, Hon. Wamuchomba-Githunguri Member of Parliament, and Hon-Onyango-Siaya County Assembly representative.

The Coalition is currently convened by the Wangu Kanja Foundation, an organization that founded the Survivors of Sexual Violence Network. CASV aims to consolidate efforts of 15 founding member human rights organizations, including KELIN, to address sexual violence in Kenya through adoption of a survivor-centered approach. During the Launch, CASV members reiterated the need for unity in addressing sexual violence through high-level national interventions and holding the government accountable on their human rights obligations particularly towards ending violence against women.

The launch created a platform to show case a short film done by Vybez radio titled ‘AKINYI’ which depicted how SGBV take place within our safe spaces, and it is normally enabled by people nearest, dearest and trusted by the victim. Hon. Wamuchomba, emphasised the need for the CSO movement to re-embed itself into parliament by bringing social issues to be addressed by the assembly to the forefront. Further, Hon. Cynthia Onyango appreciated that there exist areas for partnership and collaboration in the development of laws and policies on SGBV.

As members of the Coalition, KELIN’s input and participation in this space is essential in realizing our vision of ensuring access to justice for sexual violence victims and ending sexual violence. By advocating for rights, creating awareness, and promoting dialogue with key stakeholders at both grassroot and policy levels, we contribute to a society where survivors are supported and empowered to seek justice. Together, we work towards a future where sexual violence is eradicated, thereby promoting and protecting health related human rights for all.
